Burlington Table: A Burlington Social Initiative
The first one is scheduled for Monday, July 28th! If you’re interested click the following link to sign up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfpRDpdzqh6wYfMuBhB4nAtEjQsKVSUO3bm1tu1li-l5exnJQ/viewform?usp=dialog
The Core Concept
Burlington Table is a human-powered social initiative designed as a practical antidote to the fatigue of dating apps and the logistical challenge of making new friends as an adult. The core mission is to facilitate genuine, in-person connections by removing the friction and anxiety from the process of meeting new people.
The model is built on simplicity, thoughtful curation, and providing a frictionless experience for participants.
The Goal
To bring together a small, curated group of 6 local strangers for a single, low-pressure social event. The focus is not on romance or networking, but on the simple, enjoyable act of sharing drinks, conversation, and perhaps food in a comfortable setting. The romance and networking could/will come naturally if it’s meant to be.
The Method & Philosophy
Instead of algorithms, Burlington Table uses thoughtful, manual matching. Each group is carefully curated to ensure a comfortable mix of ages, genders, and interests, creating the optimal conditions for natural conversation and connection.
How It Works
The Sign-Up: You'll fill out a simple online form expressing interest in meeting new people over drinks. The form captures basic information about your age range, what appeals to you about the concept, and your preferences for future types of events.
The Curation: Using common-sense principles, groups are formed with attention to age balance (avoiding age outliers, or balancing age groups), gender balance when possible, and interests in socializing to create engaging but comfortable dynamics.
The Invitation: Once a group of 6 is formed, you'll receive a single email with all the details. The location, time, and simple guidelines are provided. Everyone is responsible for their own costs at the event.
The Experience: Meet at the designated brewery, find your reserved table, grab individual drinks, and spend about an hour getting to know 5 new locals. If the group is still clicking after 45 minutes, food/apps can be ordered separate, or together! If not, everyone has had a pleasant drink and met some interesting people.
The Format: Brewery Connections
Burlington Table focuses on brewery meetups as the sweet spot between casual bar encounters and commitment-heavy dinner events. The format offers several advantages:
Natural timing: The rhythm of drinks creates a comfortable 45-60 minute experience
Easy exit strategy: Participants can leave naturally after a drink or two if needed
Extension opportunity: Groups that click can order food/apps and extend the evening
Inclusive atmosphere: Great non-alcoholic options for sober participants, or just those that prefer a clear mind when chatting with new people!
Conversation-friendly: Breweries provide ambient energy without overwhelming noise
Project Features
Cost & Contribution: Everyone pays for their own drinks and food. To support the time and effort that goes into organizing these events, a suggested contribution of $5-$10 is appreciated but never required. This keeps the events accessible to everyone while recognizing my curation work.
Privacy Protection: No phone numbers are collected or shared. All communication happens via email to respect everyone's privacy and comfort levels.
Behavioral Expectations: Burlington Table maintains a welcoming environment through basic courtesy expectations - no harassment and respect for everyone's comfort levels.
Post-Event Connections: To respect everyone's privacy, contact information is not exchanged by the organizer(me). However, if you felt a connection with someone and missed the chance to get their contact info during the event, a "Missed Connections" opportunity is available. You can email the organizer, who will then privately contact the person of interest on your behalf. That person will have three options:
Agree to have their email shared with you to continue the conversation
Politely decline.
Politely decline for now, but express willingness to be in another group with you in the future, allowing for another chance to connect in a comfortable setting
Future Vision
While Burlington Table launches with brewery meetups, the long-term vision includes expanding to different formats based on community interest:
Activity-based meetups like board games or creative workshops for hands-on social experiences
Outdoor gatherings taking advantage of Burlington's natural beauty with picnics or sunset meetups
Food-focused gatherings at restaurants for those who love connecting over meals
Cultural events like wine tastings or art gallery visits for more sophisticated social experiences
The specific formats will be guided by participant feedback and expressed interests, ensuring the community shapes its own social opportunities.
The Burlington Table Experience
Burlington Table events are designed to feel effortless for participants. You show up, meet interesting people, have genuine conversations, and leave having expanded your social circle - or at minimum, having spent a pleasant evening with fellow Burlingtonians.
The goal is simple: prove that 6 strangers in Burlington can come together over drinks and create the kind of authentic social connection that makes living in a small city special. Everything else builds from there.
