Weather & What’s to Come

The last few days brought a sudden thaw that left most of us wondering if winter had just thrown in the towel. Temperatures nearly soared into the 50s, rain came down in sheets, and the melting snow had rivers and streams running high. The biggest worry now is lingering ice jams that could pop up overnight. By tomorrow, we swing back to a chillier stretch with some snow showers in the mountains. As evening creeps in, expect another cooldown that might leave a light coating of snow, especially on higher roads. We are not talking about a major storm, but the temperature roller coaster could keep your windshield wipers busy. If you’ve been itching for spring, keep an eye on the weekend. Friday and Saturday look quieter and seasonably cold, so it’s safe to plan a stroll on Church Street without carrying an umbrella.

If you enjoy local happenings, this week’s seesaw temperatures might actually be the perfect excuse to dart between indoor fun and quick bursts of fresh air. The forecast suggests it could be cloudy and brisk for part of the week, making it an excellent time to catch a show, explore an art event, or cozy up at one of Burlington’s many coffee spots. And don’t forget: Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday, so those afternoons will feel longer just in time for all that new energy flowing into town. Whether you’re warming up with a latte or braving a chilly game at Gutterson Fieldhouse, there’s plenty in store. Big week for UVM women’s playoff basketball, UVM men’s hockey, and a high school D1 championship basketball game: Burlington vs Rice Memorial! Let’s go Burlington!

Today's high temperature in Burlington reached 51°F, surpassing the historical average high of 37°F for March 5, but still below the record high of 60°F set in 1974.

But first, here’s a trivia question to see how well you’re caught up with recent news: (Answer at the bottom)

Burlington officials propose a lake bond of how much to upgrade the water treatment system?
A) $100 million

B) $152 million

C) $200 million

D) $250 million

“Job offers already made will be honored, but the freeze pauses the hiring of all long-term faculty, staff and postdoctoral positions,” states the memo. “We have had no evidence, nothing presented that says that any of UVM funds have been curtailed.” (per VTDigger)

It’s a stressful turn for anyone hoping to join the university in the near future. Administration says the pause is temporary, but folks on campus are bracing for ripple effects as state and federal budget battles continue.

“It’s something I’ve worked on one way or another pretty much throughout my whole professional career,” said Miro Weinberger on Vermont’s housing shortage. “It could actually be an opportunity for students to have an experience at influencing the way public policy gets crafted.” (per The Vermont Cynic)

Weinberger’s pivot to academia keeps him in the conversation about one of the region’s biggest challenges: finding enough places for everyone to live comfortably. Students might end up shaping policy that could affect the rest of us in the coming years.

“We have been doing ... trying to make progress on the difficult housing issues,” said the local Democratic Party chair. “I’m actually hopeful,” a Progressive Party leader responded. (per WCAX)

Voters gave a thumbs-up to big spending for city infrastructure and water system upgrades, so expect construction news in your mailbox soon. It’s looking like we’ll stay on track for some overdue repairs, though the monthly bill for water and wastewater is headed upward.

“The trucks will pop up in Vermont following their debut in Texas this week.” (per WCAX)

The ice cream legends are leaning into eco-friendly sweet treats on wheels. Be on the lookout for those Rivian-made vans purring quietly around town this spring. Another reason to look forward to warmer days—and Free Cone Day on April 8.

“He failed to talk about some of the most important issues facing the working class,” Sanders said, referencing topics like poverty and health care. (per WCAX)

While official party responses grabbed headlines, our famously independent senator doubled down with a livestream. No surprise to see him emphasizing the plight of everyday folks. Expect those debates to keep heating up as we move deeper into budget season.

“People want to take back some control of their food sources,” said one backyard chicken coop provider. (per WCAX)

Prices for a carton may still be shocking, so folks are jumping on the backyard-chicken bandwagon. Maybe we’ll see Burlington’s neighborhoods clucking right along with the early spring birds. Just keep your new coop on good terms with the neighbors.

“Burlington voters have made clear their support for this important policy change,” said Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak about the new charter amendment on firearms. (per MyChamplainValley)

Most of the big ballot items passed easily, continuing the city’s focus on managing housing, infrastructure, and public safety. On redistricting, the voters also handed more authority to the council. We’ll see if the Legislature follows through.

Sports

“Bella Vito was named Defensive Player of the Year... and Anna Olson was named to the all-conference first team.” (per UVM Athletics)

The women’s squad keeps racking up honors right before their playoff push. With Vito stealing passes and Olson lighting up the scoreboard, this team is ready to make noise in the conference tournament.

“Graduate Student Justine Clément earned silver in the slalom race... It’s Clément’s fifth podium appearance on the season.” (per UVM Athletics)

All eyes are on the Catamount skiers as they chase national titles. Clément’s strong run keeps Vermont in the thick of things. Day two of the championships could bring more medals back to Burlington.
