Wednesday, February 19th

Your Wednesday Rundown: Burlington’s still digging out, but that’s not stopping the fun. From record-breaking snowfall at Jay Peak to a Grammy winner heading our way, plus live music, comedy, and local news, here’s what’s happening.

Good evening, Burlington!

It’s shaping up to be another crisp night around Burlington, as the Arctic chill keeps its hold on the region. We aren’t eyeing any massive snowstorms, but keep an eye out for roaming flurries from a quick-moving disturbance late Thursday into early Friday—some of us could scoop up a couple of inches. By the weekend, temperatures hover near the low 30s, and there’s a chance of more snow showers on Sunday. The bigger story is the gradual warming trend by early next week, when highs may finally edge closer to 40. For now, though, expect another round of shivering sub-zero conditions overnight. Your pets would probably prefer the couch to the backyard in this weather.

If you’re heading out to enjoy the midweek scene or gearing up for weekend plans, the slightly milder outlook may be the sign you need. Thursday’s nightlife offers plenty of comedy and trivia, Friday is big on live music, and the weekend schedule is packed with everything from dance socials to paint-and-sip sessions. Dress warm, but don’t let the frosty air keep you off the dance floor or away from the next trivia showdown.

Today's high of 22°F and low of 1°F are both below Burlington's typical February 19th averages of 31°F and 15°F, respectively.

But first, here’s a trivia question to see how well you’re caught up with recent news: (Answer at the bottom)

Which Burlington-based nonprofit is currently seeking mentor volunteers to support women transitioning back into the community after incarceration?

A) Mercy Connections

B) Women Helping Battered Women

C) Vermont Works for Women

D) Steps to End Domestic Violence

“A multiple Grammy-winning artist is coming to Vermont this summer, and tickets to the show will be available soon. Singer and rock guitarist Gary Clark Jr. will play a show at Shelburne Museum as part of the Ben & Jerry's Concerts on the Green series, according to an announcement from Higher Ground.”(per MyNBC5)

Looking for a must-see outdoor show? Circle June 27 on your calendar and prep your lawn chair—Shelburne Museum is set to host a sweet summertime jam.

“On February 23, members of a Burlington synagogue and a Quaker meeting house will join forces to bake bread for a good cause. Proceeds from sales of challah, pita bread and gluten-free oat bread will benefit a pair of humanitarian aid organizations serving Israel, Gaza and the West Bank.”(per Seven Days)

It’s heartwarming to see neighbors from different backgrounds rolling up their sleeves together. Volunteer bakers are bridging divides and proving bread can bring us all to the table.

“The National Weather Service at the Burlington International Airport released statistics Monday afternoon showing totals from around the state for the storm that began Feb. 15 and lasted into Feb. 17. Widespread 12-18 inches were seen across the region with lower amounts across southern Vermont due to freezing rain and sleet.”(per Burlington Free Press)

If your shovel got a workout, you’re not alone. Whether you reveled in the powder or felt it in your lower back, Vermont’s old-school winter vibe is definitely back in action.

“Nusantara, which means ‘archipelago’ in ancient Javanese, opened at the Essex Experience shopping center in November 2022. The retailer sells antique furniture, art, clothing, jewelry and knickknacks from 70 countries, with an emphasis on Asia.”(per Seven Days)

If cabin fever has you dreaming of faraway places, a trip to Nusantara might scratch that itch. Wandering through its eclectic wares can feel like traveling the globe without leaving Chittenden County.

“Make-A-Wish Vermont unveiled a new 180-degree immersive theater this weekend that’s designed to inspire children with critical illnesses to imagine a wish that could help in their recovery. The project benefited from a $125,000 in-kind donation from Vermont Construction Co., according to a news release from Make-A-Wish Vermont.”(per Burlington Free Press)

Even a small spark of hope can brighten a child’s toughest days. Kudos to everyone involved for making dreams a bit more vivid—right in Shelburne’s own backyard.

“Wright says the mountain received 550 inches about two decades ago and that if the pace keeps up, they could be on the way to breaking that record this year. ‘Those guys get quite a bit of snow, so to be in front of them is a big deal,’ said Jay Peak president Steve Wright.”(per WCAX)

Why travel west for deep powder if Jay might go all-in this season? Keep that gear handy—this winter might have a few more surprises for us before the thaw.

“UVM officials say the ROTC won this year’s General Douglas MacArthur Award for leadership for the third time in the last 10 years. The program was chosen based on achievements including members’ GPAs, retention rates, and training and fitness.”(per WCAX)

Apparently, training in Vermont’s frigid conditions builds discipline—and accolades. Big congrats to the cadets and staff who keep that tradition of excellence alive in Burlington.

“The Burlington City Council Tuesday night unanimously signed off on an agreement that will allow the next phase of planning for the so-called South End Innovation District. That includes conducting various studies surrounding stormwater capacity, roads and different housing types.”(per WCAX)

It’s still a big parking lot today, but maybe not forever. Keep an eye on Lakeside Avenue—2026 might bring fresh housing, jobs, and a new vibe to the South End.

Sports

“For the second straight year the Catamounts opened the America East Swimming and Diving Championships setting a varsity record in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:41.53. After the first day of competition the Catamounts sit in fourth place with 84 points.”(per UVM Athletics)

If this is how UVM swims at the start of the meet, the rest of the conference better brace for a splash. A strong relay plus more finals ahead spells excitement for Catamount fans.

“Tuesday night, Rice rolled past Colchester for a 77-48 decision at Bill Hammond Gym, securing Pecor’s 400th career victory at the Catholic school. In his 22nd season with the Green Knights, Pecor owns a 400-91 record — an 81.2% winning percentage — with 10 Division I state titles, four runner-up finishes and 18 Final Four appearances.”(per Burlington Free Press)

That’s a lot of wins—and a lot of green banners. Rice basketball fans won’t be short on reasons to cheer as the season hits the playoff stretch.
