The Weather & Monday Update:

Hello there, Burlington neighbors. Despite a few slushy patches lingering from the afternoon’s on-and-off showers, most roads around town have stayed manageable. Expect the start of the week to bring a blend of wet flurries and occasional drizzle, especially across higher elevations. Watch out for a stray icy patch if you’re driving east, since temps could hover near the freezing mark there tonight. Our forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday looks just as indecisive, with a mix of mild rain showers and light snow that might keep you guessing. It’s not the loveliest farewell to March, but at least we can say it’s rarely dull around here.

The good news is, the flurries shouldn’t scare you away from our packed events lineup. Grab your boots or a warm jacket and head out to line dancing at Burlington Beer Company later tonight, or sneak in a quick dodgeball session at the Miller Center if you’re feeling feisty. As the week chugs along, remember there’s no shortage of things to do. Whether you’re hitting a bike ride on Tuesday or planning a cozy evening at a movie screening on Wednesday, there’s a little something for everyone—even if you have to dodge a snowflake or two on your way.

Historically, Burlington's average high and low temperatures for March 24 are 40°F and 22°F, respectively, with a record high of 84°F and a record low of -24°F. Today, the forecasted high is 39°F and the low is 35°F. This means today's high is near the historical average, but the low is significantly warmer than usual.

Local News

“To be in an environment where people believe that learning and education matters deeply to the future is really exciting to me,” Tromp said Thursday (per WCAX).

UVM’s newest president arrives with a track record of boosting graduation rates and research at her previous institutions. It’s safe to say the campus is abuzz with both curiosity and cautious optimism. If Tromp can keep those numbers climbing, we might just have another reason to brag about our own backyard Ivy in all but name.

“Champ is a 3-foot-tall metallic structure that resembles a guillotine on wheels, minus the decapitating blade,” (per Seven Days).

These high school engineers sure know how to keep it interesting. In just six weeks, local teams whipped up competition-ready robots and bagged awards across New England. We’ll soon be looking for them on the world stage, showing that Vermont is more than maple syrup and mountain hikes.

“I’m holding as a mayor here both the urgency of bringing this lifesaving tool online but making sure we’re taking the responsible amount of time to do things right,” Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak said (per Seven Days).

The city council and local nonprofits want to get it done, but regulatory hoops and site selection are proving tricky. Neighbors are anxious for a solution to opioid-related emergencies, yet opinions vary on the best location. For many, the hope is that slow and steady will still save lives when this service finally arrives.

“Starting at 6 a.m. Monday morning and continuing through 6 p.m. Monday, March 31, residents are asked to curb non-essential outdoor and indoor water use,” (per WCAX).

The Champlain Water District has to tackle a major pipeline project, and they’d rather not run dry in the middle of it all. If you’re in South Burlington or Shelburne, think twice about any extra-long showers this week. With luck, cutting back now means fewer headaches later—no one wants to scrounge for bottled water at midnight.

Btown Eats (Meal Kit & Grocery Service)

Food is better when it’s shared. That’s the idea behind Btown Eats—a new local meal kit project built right here in Burlington. For just $11 a week, I’ll be your grocer, your kitchen sidekick, and, basically, your new neighborhood friend.

We all might live in separate homes, but there’s no reason we all can’t enjoy the same meals together. Grocery shopping hasn’t kept up with how we actually live—and that’s where Btown Eats comes in.

Each week, you’ll pick from five hand-selected meals you’re interested in cooking. I’ll portion out just what you need (no more half-used sauces or random spices collecting dust), gather any groceries you’d like to add for the week, and provide easy, straightforward recipes to guide you. All the quality of home-cooked food, without the usual hassle. Here’s how it works:

• Browse this week’s five meal options
• Select your meals and serving sizes
• Add any extras you need—breakfast, snacks, lunch items, etc. (Default picks are affordable store brand (Hannaford) unless you say otherwise)
• Submit your selections with your email and phone number

I’ll confirm your order via text, invoice you via PayPal or Venmo, and prep everything for pickup (or delivery for a $10 feeso picking it up will help you keep costs low!). Everything you purchase is at-cost besides the flat $11 fee for portioning and picking out your groceries.

And because food is meant to be celebrated:
Snap a photo of your finished meal and send it to [email protected]. I’d love to feature your creations in the newsletter and help us all feel a little more connected, one bite at a time.

Let’s bring Burlington together—one home-cooked meal at a time. I’ve picked 4 dinners + 1 dessert to kick things off:

  • Pan-Seared Chicken with Pesto Pasta: Tender chicken, vibrant pesto, cherry tomatoes, and farfalle pasta. (~$4/serving, ~900 cal, ~70g protein)

  • Indian Butter Chicken: Rich, tomato-cream sauce with broiled chicken thighs, basmati rice, and naan. (~$4/serving, ~450 cal, ~34g protein)

  • Simple Fried Rice: Quick, tasty jasmine rice mixed with eggs, ham, and veggies. (~$2/serving, ~460 cal, ~20g protein)

  • Salmon with Old Bay Butter & Confetti Grits: Seared salmon topped with Old Bay lemon butter, served over creamy corn and bell pepper grits. (~$7/serving, ~900 cal, ~50g protein)

  • Blueberry Biscuits: Tender biscuits with real blueberries and honey butter. (~$6 total, ~400 cal each)

(2 serving minimum per meal). Click the link to start making your selections, or to learn more:
