Tonight’s Weather & Weekend Outlook

An unsettled pattern is keeping Burlington on its toes. Light snow from last night made for some slick roads this morning, and temperatures struggled to hit the 20s by midday. Clouds will filter in again overnight, leading to another wave of snow that could drop a few inches into early Saturday. By Saturday afternoon, some parts of town may see a brief change to rain as temperatures climb toward the upper 30s, but be ready for slush and slippery spots when that colder air returns. Sunday looks brighter but bitter, with highs stuck in the teens and wind chills dragging below zero much of the day.

Even so, it is a good time to break out your warmest sweater and enjoy some of the eclectic events around town. From lively concerts at Nectar’s to local art workshops, Burlington’s weekend lineup will defy the cold. Some spots might still have a little ice underfoot, so watch your step on the way to your Friday night show or Saturday paint class. By Sunday, if you are brave enough to venture out for brunch or a matinee, plan on bundling up so the wind does not steal your warmth.

“Student advocates from the University of Vermont and Champlain College showed their support for a proposed ordinance that would prohibit guns in Burlington bars.” (per WCAX)

Their push comes as the bar-related shooting last year remains on people’s minds. The measure will go before voters on Town Meeting Day, so expect more conversation around this charter change as Election Day approaches.

“This business had done unpermitted work inside which led to a capacity concern.” (per Burlington Free Press)

Longtime patrons hope that these hurdles can be cleared soon. Until then, the downtown spot that once buzzed with late-night slices is dark while owners work toward compliance.

“For the last few years, a family of beavers has made a home in Geprags Community Park in Hinesburg, and they’ve been renovating.” (per VTDigger)

Turns out, these furry engineers have been creating wetlands that excel at trapping phosphorus. Some folks are even asking whether landowners should be rewarded for hosting helpful beavers. Talk about nature’s own civil engineers.

“The arts scene will continue to fill out with music, theater, comedy and more.” (per Burlington Free Press)

March is looking loaded with entertainment, from big-name comedians at the Flynn to local theaters premiering new productions. If you are ready to ditch cabin fever, there is no shortage of places to laugh and cheer.

“We’ve been able to provide meaningful wage adjustments for staff members whose vital work promotes the safety, health and wellbeing of children.” (per Vermont Business Magazine)

It is a big boost for this Burlington nonprofit, which unites local agencies to protect children. If you care about supporting youth outreach programs, this is a good reminder that community-focused nonprofits are always appreciative of a helping hand.

“The plan would move the state to a foundation formula by fiscal year 2028, two budget cycles from now.” (per Burlington Free Press)

Officials hope to streamline school districts and manage rising education costs. Keep an eye on how the legislature reacts, because some of these proposals—like mandatory class sizes—could spark lively debate.

“Two City Council seats are being vacated, leaving the balance of power between Democrats and Progressives uncertain.” (per Burlington Free Press)

This year’s votes also include a school budget proposal, three infrastructure bonds, and some notable charter changes. Whether you’re Team Progressive, Team Democrat, or just want that pothole fixed, get your ballot in by Tuesday.

“A recent survey showed 57 percent of state employees still have some kind of hybrid arrangement.” (per WCAX)

Although remote work empties some local offices—and hits downtown eateries—leaders say it also helps fill state job openings. If you’re missing that midday café bustle, new housing conversions might be on the horizon for vacant office space.

Sports

"Four players scored in double figures for the third time this season as Vermont cruised to victory over NJIT, 75-43." (per UVM Athletics)

The Catamounts continue their impressive run and hope to carry this momentum into Senior Day on Saturday.

"Shamir Bogues led the Catamounts in scoring with 22 points as Vermont dominated the second half to secure a 71-61 win." (per UVM Athletics)

A strong second half turned things around for UVM, setting them up nicely for their matchup at UMBC this weekend.
