Your Friday Fix: Snowstorms, Local Buzz & Weekend Plans – A winter storm is rolling in, but Burlington isn’t slowing down. From UVM’s big research milestone to weekend events, sports updates, and where to meet new people, here’s everything you need to know before you head into the long weekend.

Good evening, Burlington!

If you thought the sun was taking it easy on us this Valentine’s Day, buckle up for a wintry weekend. A robust storm system is expected to drop significant snow late Saturday through early Monday, potentially piling up at least half a foot or more. Folks south of the city might see bouts of sleet or freezing rain on Sunday, which could complicate travel and have your windshield wipers running in overdrive. By Monday night, blustery winds and chilly air roll in to remind us that, yes, you do need that thicker hat. If you’re heading out, keep the shovel and that ice scraper handy.

When you’re not practicing your driveway-shoveling technique, there’s plenty to keep you busy over the next few days. Cozy up with a comedy show tonight, or fuel up for some live music and craft brews on Saturday. And if you’re digging those winter vibes, there are events where you can skate, listen to live music, or even make the most of subzero chills (we Vermonters know how to have fun in any temperature). More details below—just don’t forget an extra pair of wool socks.

On February 14, 2025, Burlington experienced a high of 26°F and a low of 16°F, slightly below the average high of 31°F and average low of 14°F for this date.

“What this does is put us in the very top tier of research institutions in the country,” said UVM Larner College of Medicine Dean Richard Page. (per WCAX)

It’s a big leap for the university, promising broader grant funding and bolstering its reputation for innovation. Good news for curious minds and for the local economy that thrives on cutting-edge research.
