Monday, February 3rd
Burlington's feel-good news, events, weather and discussion all in one place. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Good Evening, Burlington!
Burlington’s forecast sees early-week precipitation transitioning from rain to snow, with slick surfaces likely during commute times. Another wave of wintry weather could arrive by Thursday, so keep those windshield scrapers close and plan for changing conditions.
If you’ve stepped outside lately, you’ll notice Burlington can’t quite decide whether to soak us or bury us in snow. One moment it’s a slushy drizzle, the next it’s chunky flurries floating by—classic February mood swings, so buckle up until midweek when we catch our breath (briefly) before more flakes and chill return.
Speaking of midweek, you won’t lack for things to do around town if you’re feeling adventurous between snow squalls. Pop by Monday’s open mics or trivia nights in Winooski, swing your partner at the Champlain Club on Tuesday, then catch local jazz, comedy, or even a cozy round of chair yoga Wednesday—just keep an eye on those slick sidewalks and stay caffeinated, folks!

Today's high of 37°F surpasses the typical February 3rd average of 28°F, inching closer to the 1991 record of 55°F.
On February 3rd in Burlington, the sun rises at 7:08 AM and sets at 5:05 PM, giving us nearly 10 hours of daylight.
But first, here’s a trivia question to see how well you’re caught up with recent news: (Answer at the bottom)
What Mexican state is the inspiration behind the new Williston restaurant, El Comal?
(A) Jalisco
(B) Oaxaca
(C) Baja California
(D) Yucatán
“We’re excited to see buildings that were vacant for a while have new tenants.” per WCAX
Looks like the neighborhood might finally get a glow-up after years of graffiti and tumbleweeds. Fingers crossed for a new pizza spot that doesn’t vanish before we even get a slice.
“The STEM and leadership skills the students develop through this program are exactly what we need for our future workforce.” per the Burlington Free Press
Give these kids extra applause—and maybe some celebratory maple creemees. They’re set to show off their engineering talents in Houston and Florida, so root for them while quietly envying their winter escapes.
“The Vermont Agency of Education is looking for sponsors for their Summer Food Service program.” per WCAX
When school’s out, kiddos still need proper grub. If your group can lend a helping ladle, step right up—popsicles all around (or maybe warm soup, given our chilly nights).
“It’s one of many sites set up and open across the state.”per WCAX
If the thought of your W-2 gives you heart palpitations, Vermont Law’s got your back. Expect them to handle the complicated stuff while you daydream about springtime on Church Street.
“One of the co-founders of Mamava, Christine Dodson, is taking over in February as chief executive officer…” per the Burlington Free Press
Mamava pods have popped up in airports and offices like mushrooms after a rainstorm. Let’s cheer on a homegrown business that makes life easier for new moms—score one for #BTV innovation.
“In Denmark, everyone is guaranteed health care, college education is free, parents receive 1-year of paid paternity leave & workers don’t make less than $22 an hour.”per USA TODAY
Bernie’s got jokes—and possibly the best off-the-wall pitch to repurpose Uncle Sam’s time. Let’s just hope we can keep it civil, or at least keep any strong winds from blowing away the memo.
“Then Schuster thought of the Waking Windows festival that for more than a decade has unfolded over multiple days in multiple venues.” per the Burlington Free Press
February in Vermont can feel like six more weeks of “not going outside,” so might as well boogie indoors. Looks like folks in the 802 found a new reason to break out the flannel and dance away those winter blues.
“Bogues later iced the game at the free throw line.”per WCAX
Move over, maple swirl—Bogues might be our new local hero. The Cats are clawing their way up the standings, so let’s hope they keep draining those buzzer-beaters.
“Bogues’ 3-pointer via a Blake assist broke a 49-all deadlock with 33 seconds left in regulation as Vermont halted a two-game losing skid.” per the Burlington Free Press
The scoreboard might have been tighter than downtown parking, but a win’s a win. Now if only we could break our mid-winter losing streak against lingering ice.
That’s All, Burlington!
Stay safe on those frosty sidewalks, lend a hand if you can, and keep warm spirits rolling through winter’s final rounds. As always, send us your local scoops, tips, and good vibes—and we’ll see you next time on the Btown Brief.
